critical lesson(1)
My class is in an extra-curricular English class as part of an after-school program at an elementary school in a near city of Seoul in Korea, which I worked since last year. The school provides an after-school English program according to Korean government policy of reducing the parents’ burden for English education. The parents at this school could not afford private English lessons, so they want to participate in the program. I am in charge of three different kinds of after school program, nursing class, ping-pong player class, and creativity class. The school gives me the extra money by different scale. The first and second classes are paid by the time period and the last is supplied with the number of students. I didn’t get any extra money last year for lacking in the regular classes per week. They are for younger students from first grade to fourth grade.
Nursing class is mixed with ages and levels. At the beginning of semester, it starts with almost 30 and will reduce the number of students as class goes by. During seventeen class periods, students get to know the alphabet and phonics. To cut back the preparation for the class, I choose a phinics book that is provided from the school. At the introduction stage, I have the greeting, review and introducing today's lesson to warm and motivate. I usually show the video clip that is useful to focus on. Favorite character, atrractive visual and cheerful melody is needed to choose. They sing a song by following the tune. I always ask the comprehensive questions to check how much they understand. At the development stage, I teach the contents on the basis of the textbook. I just use it 1 page each period. I ask a lot of questions as soon as possible by using the textbook. I let them guess and imagine more. At the consolidation stage, I asses them one by one after inducing them concentrating some work like worksheet.
